Huntington Lake Is Low But Mountain Merchants Remain Positive About A Profitable Summer

Huntington Lake has always been known for sailboats and Summer regattas but the water is so low this year that the regattas have been canceled.  Locals say the water is only one-third of capacity and it is going to stay that way due to the drought.

Lesley Storz has been bringing her children and friends to Huntington for years.  She's never seen the lake so low.  "It's shocking.  It was really, really shocking.  Never in my 40 years coming here have I ever seen it like this."

At Lakeshore Resort, Amanda Arteno remains optimistic about the Summer of 2014.  Her family has been running the general store, saloon and restaurant for 25 years.  They also have 28 rental cabins.  "It's been a little slower than usual but we do have an RV Park at Lakeshore Resort.  All of our cabins are booked this weekend so that's exciting for us."

A number of events are planned for this Summer to entice people to come up the hill.  A two day "Rock Crawl" is set for July 5th and 6th where four wheelers have to find a way to drive over a number of boulders by the lake.

The water may be down but the lake is still being stocked with fish.  Amanda Arteno says having all 28 of their cabins rented this weekend is a positive sign that people want to enjoy the outdoors at 7-thousand feet. She says if you do make the trip remember to bring warm clothing for the evenings.
