Blood Moon: KMPH FOX 26 News Viewers Capture It On Camera!

FRESNO, Calif. (KMPH) -

Stargazers got a glimpse of a rare treat Tuesday night, as a blood moon crossed the earth's shadow.

The moon took on a devilish glow as it appeared in different phases from about 11 p.m. till 1:30 in the morning.

So why does this happen, a blood moon occurs when sunlight first passes through the earth's atmosphere, filtering out most of the blue colored light, ushering in the reddish tones.

NASA Scientist Dr. Shawn Domogal-Goldman says, "The little bit of sunlight that does get through is going to be the same kind of sunlight we see at sunrise and sunset. It's red. And a way to think of this, is you are going to see all the sunrises and sunsets from all across the planet earth hitting the moon at the same time."

By the way if you missed the blood moon, mark your calendar. The next one will reveal itself on October 8th.
