Valley Drought 2014: Will Boaters Have Enough Water?

The upcoming hot days might sound like a perfect time to hit Millerton Lake.

But it might not be an option for people looking to break out their boats.

The water in Millerton Lake is slowly disappearing.

"It's just really low," said Daniel Ford. " I've never seen it this way before."

According to the State Department of Water Resources, The lake is only at 32% capacity. This time of year, it's usually at 46% capacity.

Families with little ones said as long as there is any water, they'll continue to come and enjoy what is there.

But while the shallow end is fine for children, boaters can't really say the same.

People out boating Sunday were forced to pull their boat much further down than usual. They said they had a hard time avoiding shallow patches and debris that could damage their prized boat.

"If the water level was a little higher, it wouldn't be so desolate and so dry. It's like the red sea out here,"said Ford.

Businesses in the area are keeping a close eye on the lake's level too.

One Millerton Lake staple is the Friant Trading Post.

During the peak summer months, half of its business comes from people heading to the lake.

ITS ESPECIALLY NERVE WRENCHING FOR SURROUNDING BUSINESSES LIKE THE FRIANT TRADING POST.

"This is probably the worst year for us sales wise because of the rain," said Revnet Singh whose family owns the trading post.

The Singh family has owned the trading post for the last 10 years and says this is the slowest season it has had.
