Earthquakes Shake Chile and California, Is It A Sign Of The Big One?

Posted:
FRESNO, Calif. (KMPH) -

A 7.8 aftershock hit the Northern Coast of Chile Wednesday evening. The aftershock comes less than a day after an 8.2 earthquake shook Chile and killed six people.

The earthquake in Chile is along a very active part of Earth called the "Ring of Fire." The area has a lot of volcanoes and fault lines and California is in it. Since a 5.1 quake and hundreds of aftershocks hit Los Angeles this past weekend, many are wondering if the quakes are connected to the ones in Chile.

"We have never found worldwide a pattern of building up and then you get the really big earthquake," says Lucy Jones, Seismologist with the U.S. Geological Survey, "It's not the way earthquakes look, and most of them are random."

In other parts of the world there have been recent earthquakes along the "Ring of Fire." The earthquake that hit Japan and caused the meltdown at Fukushima was in the quake prone area.
