$2 Million Grant To Build New Fresno County Animal Shelter

FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (KMPH) -

After nearly two years of trying to make due in the old Fresno County coroner's building, Liberty Animal Control got some good news today.

Tuesday morning, the board of supervisors voted unanimously to grant the animal shelter 2-million dollars to build a brand new facility.

The conditions haven't exactly been optimal throughout the last couple of years for animal control in the county.

"I think we need it really bad actually at the moment," said Danielle Bustos, a dispatcher for the shelter.

Bustos says she knows first hand how bad the needs are for the county.

"I feel like we can get a lot more done with a better facility," added Bustos.

2-million dollars is a big deal for dogs and cats at Liberty Animal Control.

The current make-shift space has been the only option since the county's bitter break up with the Central California SPCA.

Liberty is finally getting the break it's been waiting for.

"How do we treat those animals that we pick up from off the street that are looking for new homes or looking for their owners? We bring them here to the Fresno county shelter which is public intake, and we can do better for them," said Karen Wilkins, the owner of Liberty Animal Control.

The money means new walls, a new roof and a brand new facility.

"We tend to suffer during really harsh weather months ... like when it's really cold or really rainy."

Employees say they're hoping for a new office and bigger kennels for the dogs.

The shelter currently takes in an average of 10 to 12 cats or dogs a day.

They're hoping for separate rooms for animals with different needs.

"I think this is going to be a wonderful thing for the animals...and that's the bottom line," said Wilkins.

Construction is expected to begin later this year.

Liberty will be consulting with UC Davis and Community leaders on the design of the new space.
