Man Killed in Shooting with Fresno Police Officers

Posted: Updated:

Fresno Police say a man has died after an officer shot him Sunday afternoon in Southwest Fresno.

It happened around 5:40 p.m., in the area of Lorena and Bardell.

Officers say they were carrying out a traffic stop after a red BMW, with paper license plates, did an illegal u-turn.

They say three people were in the car, when the two passengers bolted.

One of the men got away, but officers say the second man reached for a gun as he left the car.

"When the individual got out of the vehicle, the officer stated that the suspect was armed with a handgun," says Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer. "It was in his hand at that time. We're not sure what happened once they ran into the apartment complex."

Moments later, one of the officers shot the man.

He later died at a hospital.

Dyer says a loaded handgun was recovered at the scene.

A second officer stayed behind in the car with the driver.

Dyer says drugs, including pills and marijuana, were found inside and near the car.

He says the man killed appears to be 18 to 20 years old.

Officers aren't sure about his name yet, and because of this they do not know if he had any criminal history.

Dyer says the officer who shot the man is a veteran of the police force.

He works with the violent crime team.

He was patrolling West Fresno, targeting gang crime.
