Valley Drought 2014: Huron Facing Water Crisis

Posted:
HURON, Calif. (KMPH) -

Huron is scrambling to keep the water flowing to its residents.  The western Fresno County community is in a pinch because it doesn't have its own water source.

Huron has nearly 7,000 residents.  It relies entirely on the state for drinking water.  Since water allocations are shriveling city hall is doing all it can to conserve.

Huron gets its water from the California Aqueduct just east of town.  It pays a little more than 100 dollars for an acre foot of water.  That is significantly higher than other valley communities that buy federal or state water.

Mayor Sylvia Chavez says that's because Huron is overdrawn on this year's allocation.  The mayor says city hall is doing everything it can to conserve.   Water rates were raised two years ago and recently the council voted to limit outside watering to two days a week.

Huron city leaders were unavailable Thursday because they were meeting with the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Fresno to see what federal money is available.

Mayor Chavez is confident that Huron won't run out of drinking water this year but she admits more stringent conservation measures aren't out of the question.
