Selma Firefighter In Critical Condition, Gets Community Support

Posted: Updated:

Selma firefighter Chris Nelson remains in critical but stable condition at a Fresno hospital.

Nelson was hurt on February 11, 2014, after he fell from a 24-foot ladder during a training exercise.

Because more surgeries are likely in the future for Nelson, members of the Fresno Fire Department opened its door to hold a blood drive in Nelson's name.

More than a hundred lined up, patiently waiting to roll up their sleeves and give, not just blood but with donations for the nelson family as well.

Nelson's son, Jared says, "I can not thank everybody enough for the blessings and support that everyone has given my dad it is truly amazing. My dad is pulling through, he's recovering, he is just really banged up and getting better day by day."

Selma firefighter Anthony Rivas says, "Of course not all this blood will go to Chris. It will go to other people, which is something Chris would want. He would want to help as many people as well."

Even strangers came out.

Patsy Horton says she never met Nelson, but when she heard about the blood drive on KMPH Fox 26 News she had to go.

Nelson has been a Selma firefighter for more than 10 years.

From all of us here at KMPH Fox 26 News, keep healing.
