Spanking - Politicians Want It Allowed In School

A bill proposed in the Kansas legislature would give school teachers and caregivers more power to spank children.

Supporters of the measure say children need to be taught respect.

The bill proposed in the Kansas House of Representatives suggests easing the spanking laws to allow parents, or anyone given permission by a parent, to spank hard enough to leave redness or bruising on the child's bottom.

Child abuse experts say this won't help kids respect adults. They say spanking is less effective than a time out.

Supporters say kids are losing respect for authority and that parents need to be able to discipline without fear of legal retribution.

30 other states disagree, and banned corporal punishment altogether.
