Posted: Updated:

California Highway Patrol Officers are investigating a tragic crash that killed five people, four of them children.

It happened around 7 p.m. in the area of Excelsior and Marks, near Riverdale in Fresno County.

Officers say a 29-year-old woman was driving a Ford Expedition with the children, ages 2, 3, 6 and 11 northbound on Marks, when it crashed with a Nissan car that was going westbound on Excelsior.

The Ford then burst into flames, with the woman and children inside.

Officers say her husband was not far behind, and tried to rescue them.

But he was not able to.

The driver of the other car was a 41-year-old woman.

She was also hurt and was flown to a hospital for treatment.
