New SF Bay Bridge Is Up, But Why Is The Old One Still There?

Posted:

So we have a new Bay Bridge in San Francisco.

You may be asking: Why is the old one still there?

Demolition of the old Bay Bridge span is now 5 months behind schedule.

It's also $5 million over budget.

That's because CalTrans officials are worried that a major earthquake could collapse the old bridge.

So they took workers off of the demolition project to get the new bridge open by Labor Day.

That staff shift delayed the permitting process for the demolition.
