Coloring in Soda Could Cause Cancer

Check your soda label! According to Consumer Reports, the caramel coloring that is added to some soft drinks might cause cancer.

Because of those concerns, California limits the amount of coloring manufacturers can use.

But, according to Consumer Reports two soda products it tested exceeded those limits: 12–ounce cans of "Pepsi One" and "Malta Goya."

A Consumer Reports toxicologist says there's no reason for soda drinkers to be exposed to the chemical, since it's avoidable and just used to color the drinks.

At this point, the FDA claims there's no reason to believe the chemical poses a health risk.

But the agency is reportedly testing a variety of food and beverages with carmel coloring, and reviewing safety data to see if any action needs to be taken.
