Governor's State of the State Highlights Drought and Paying Down Debt

Posted:
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KMPH) -

Governor Jerry Brown delivered the State of the State Address in Sacramento Wednesday morning.

He started his speech by expressing a commitment to pay down our debts and remember the lessons of history.

He highlighted California's fiscal comeback while vowing to establish a rainy day fund to help keep the state in the black.

As expected, Brown renewed the call for all of us to conserve long term water plans.

Governor Brown said, "Among all our uncertainties, weather is one of the most basic. We can't control it; we can only live with it. And now we have to live with a very serious drought of uncertain duration.  Right now, it's imperative that we do everything possible to mitigate the effects of the drought. I have convened an Interagency Drought Task Force and declared a State of Emergency. We need everyone in every part of the state to conserve water. We need regulators to re balance water rules and enable voluntary transfers of water and we must prepare for forest fires."

Governor Brown said the state has a lot to be proud of, including a million new jobs since 2010, a budget surplus, and minimum wage going up to $10 an hour in January 2016.
