Divers Recover Body of Navy Pilot with Roots in Sanger

Posted: Updated:

Navy divers have recovered the body of a Navy Lieutenant who, at one time, lived in Sanger.

Lt. Sean Christopher Snyder was one of five crew members on board a Navy helicopter, known as a Sea Dragon, when it crashed during a training exercise last week off the Virginia Coast.

Divers found the helicopter's cockpit Monday night, but any further search was suspended because of the weather.

Crews resumed the search on Tuesday, and found Lt. Snyder's remains.

Lt. Snyder's family released the following statement through the Navy Tuesday:

"Divers have recovered the remains of Lt. Sean Snyder. The family is truly thankful to the men and women of the United States Navy. Sean was a man of honor and a true hero, not only to his country, but also to his wife, children, family, and friends. Our strength and trust remain in Christ."

Two Sailors died at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital from their injuries and two others were treated and released.

The cause of the crash is still being investigated.

WAVY reports a memorial service for the Lt. Snyder and the two other crew members killed in the crash is planned for Friday at Naval Station Norfolk.
