New Laws Starting In 2014 Will Affect Drivers

Posted:
FRESNO, Calif. (KMPH) -

New Year's is less than a week away and that means new laws are going to go into effect in 2014. Here's a look at some of the new laws that will affect drivers.

A new bicycle law bans drivers from passing bicyclists when there is less than 3–feet between the car and bike. If there is less than 3–feet than the car has to wait and can only pass when there's no danger to the person on the bike. You have several months to get used to that law; it starts on September 16th.

Get ready to pay more to register your car starting January 1st. Registration fees will go up by $1 for cars and $2 for commercial vehicles. The increase will pay for programs related to vehicle theft crimes.

Another new law will expand Amber Alerts. The new law requires law enforcement to request activation after receiving a report that a child has been abducted by anyone, including a custodial parent or guardian, who may hurt or kill the child.

If you're under 18–years old you can't write, send, or read a text while driving, even with a hands free device.
