Homeless Man Hit, Killed by Train

Posted:

For the second time in a week, a man has been killed crossing the train tracks south of Downtown Fresno.

On Friday, just before 7:00 a.m. Fresno police say the homeless man stopped at the tracks on California and East, while a Southbound cargo train passed by.

As soon as the train finished, he pushed a shopping cart on the tracks.

But officers say he did not see a Northbound Amtrak train, and he was hit.

"The rail arms were working. There was an audio alert and a physical barrier was down. But the train comes faster than you realize," said Fresno Police Sgt. Mike Smith.

The train was about to arrive at the Fresno station, and passengers were on board.

Friday's incident was just a block away from the site where another man was hit and killed on Monday.

That man was walking his bike at Cedar and East, but stopped for a cargo train. As soon as that train went by, he crossed the tracks and did not see an oncoming Amtrak train.

He died instantly.

"It is all too common," said Sgt. Mike Smith.
