Street Lights Back On In Fresno

Posted:
FRESNO, Calif. (KMPH) -

You may have noticed the streets of Fresno are now looking a bit brighter. That's because the city has finished repairing all of the damaged streetlights.

For years, copper thieves only had to lift a 15-pound lid to steal wiring.

At one point, as many as 4,000 street lights were out.

Mayor Swearengin said, "Many neighborhoods and many residents were experiencing the darkness of night and that is a security concern and a quality of life issue for us in the City of Fresno."

The electrical boxes are now sealed with cement, so you would need a jackhammer to break through to get to the wires.

Now that this project is complete, city crews will be able to repair other street light problems in two to four weeks.

It had been taking crews a year or more before replacing bulbs or making other repairs.
