NAS Lemoore Sailors Head to Philippines to Help Typhoon Victims

KMPH News has learned 1,000 sailors from NAS Lemoore are on the way to the Philippines to help with recovery efforts following Typhoon Haiyan.

They are on board the aircraft carrier U.S.S. George Washington.

Monday, Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel ordered the aircraft carrier and other U.S. Navy ships to leave Hong Kong for the Philippines. 

The aircraft carrier has 5,000 Sailors and more than 80 aircraft on board.

The four fighter squadrons from Lemoore include VFA-27, VFA-102, VFA-115 and VFA-195. 

These ships and aircraft will be able to provide humanitarian assistance, supplies, and medical care in support of the ongoing efforts led by the government and military of the Republic of the Philippines. 

The carrier should arrive by Wednesday night or Thursday morning.
