K-9 Captures Merced Burglary Suspect

Posted:
MERCED, Calif. (KMPH) -

Merced Police want to know why a man had diplomas, passports and military awards that did not belong to him.

They were called Thursday afternoon to the area of 20th and E Streets after a watchful neighbor saw a man he did not recognize in his neighbor's back yard.

He told officers the man was carrying a backpack full of items.

Once officers arrived, the man ran away. Officers chased him through the neighborhood. A K9 officer later alerted officers the man was hiding in the basement of an open garage.

The K9 eventually went in, and that's when the man, identified as Alan Callahan, said he would give up.

The neighbor identified Callahan as the man he saw in his neighbor's back yard.

Officers found electronics, diplomas, passports and various awards that the victim received while serving in the US Army.

Callahan was booked into the Merced County Jail for residential burglary-- thanks to the watchful of a neighbor who reported the suspicious activity.

Anyone with information on this crime is asked to please contact the Merced Police Department Detectives Division at 209 385-4702 or the Tip-line at 209 385-4725.

You can text a tip to TIP411 (847411) and using "comvip" as the first word in the text message.
