Caught On Camera: Vandal Hits St. John's Cathedral

Posted: Updated:
FRESNO, Calif. (KMPH) -

Caught on camera, a man is recorded walking into St. John's Cathedral in downtown Fresno and kicking in and destroying a church door.

The man at times appears to be having a conversation with himself, then goes passed some ropes protecting the alter and kicks in a door.

Church members say the surveillance video makes them disgusted.

Delicia Adame says, "It's sad to think even coming to church we don't feel safe. We have to be watching our backs. We come to church to pray and be at peace but we can't do that now."

Church officials say the man cracked the door frame about half way from the ground. The door was destroyed. It was more than 100 years old and one of the original pieces of the building, which was established in 1882.

Church leaders say the latest attack is just one of many in the last few months.

Now the doors to the cathedral will be locked, except for mass, confessions, and special events. It will prevent people from entering and praying after thieves preyed on the church.

Church members have this message for the crook.

Maria Morales says, "Maybe you think nobody see you. God is watching you, wherever you are, wherever you hiding, God knows where you at."

Fresno detectives are investigating the crime, anyone with information is urged to call Crimestoppers at (559) 498-STOP.

Remember you don't have to give your name, and your tip could earn you a cash reward.
