This week's TNS is Edison against Madera and is carried live and in high definition on KMPH's sister station, the CW, KFRE 59.
As KMPH sports reporter Nick King discovered, football is big, but that's not the only thing the two schools have going.
Most folks are going to know how good the Tigers are - they're 7-0. But first year Coach Matt Johnson also wants people to know they're doing very well academically. As of today every player is eligible, and the cumulative GPA is 3.0. He says a big reason for the change is weekly reports - where anyone who is not keeping up in the classroom is called out in front of the entire freshman, JV and Varsity squads.
Coach Johnson said, "If we're a 12 cylinder Ferrari - if you believe what you hear and read - we're running on about seven cylinders right now. My job is to get us running on 11, when it really matters, when the money is on the line and it's time to win a big game, we gotta get better."
Edison junior cornerback Tyler Horton said, "For me... I play like every game is on TV. So as the cameras roll on, and just show the world what we can do, it's just another step, to success."
Madera senior defensive end Julian Martinez said, "Trying to make an upset. Just gonna play our hearts out. It's our senior year... for some of us it's our senior year, so..."
First year Madera Head Coach Bonner Cunnings said, "You know we're talking character number one, and we're really focused on the off-the-field issues. And then academics were number two... and these kids responded. You know, obviously our record needs to improve to show the rest."
