Education Icon Dr. Peter Mehas Dead At 73

FRESNO, Calif. (KMPH) -

Dr. Peter Mehas made his mark in education.  But along the way he also became a leader in our community who was full of life, inspirational and opinionated.

Friday night the former Fresno County Superintendent died at St. Agnes Hospital from an aneurysm.

Dr. Mehas was elected as Fresno County Superintendent of Schools in 1990.  A post he was re–elected to three more times in 1994, 1998 and 2002.  Following retirement he served as a trustee for the California State University system.

Attorney Mike Woods played football for Mehas who was varsity coach at Roosevelt High.  "He inspired the players.   He was great at getting you to be more than you can be and persuading a person with even moderate athletic talents that you had much greater talents than you did."

Mike Woods and his wife Susan traveled with Pete and Demi Mehas to Greece and Turkey earlier this month.

Bill Smittcamp and his wife Linda traveled with them to Australia two years ago.  There's always Pete with his arms out, wide stretched singing whether he is in tune or not but he's singing whether he knew the words or not.   But he is singing.   That's the way I'll always remember Pete Mehas.

Mehas was also political.   He served as education secretary for Governor George Deukmejian. In the 90's he was appointed to an advisory commission on education excellence, by former President George Bush.

Mehas was a pillar of the community who Mike Woods said he lived life to the fullest.  "He was a giant, he was a character, boy was he fun and opinionated,  plugged into current events, politics and education.   He loved to laugh and sing and dance."

Pete Mehas died four days before his 74th birthday.  Funeral services are pending.

Funeral services will be held this Friday at 10:00 a.m. at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, located at 2219 N. Orchard Street in Fresno.
