Tattoo Crackdown? New Army Rules May Come Soon

Posted:
FRESNO, Calif. (KMPH) -

Join the Army, but not if you have visible tattoos.  That would be the rule if the Army adopts new rules regarding body ink that appear close to reality.

The Army's top enlisted man, Sgt. Major of the Army Raymond Chandler, handed down that message in Afghanistan last weekend.

The told troops that the Secretary of the Army likes the new rules but has not yet officially approved them.

The rules would stop new recruits from having tattoos visible below their knees or elbows or above their necklines.

Soldiers already serving can keep their tats, as long as they aren't considered racist, sexist, or extremist.

The military newspaper "Stars and Stripes" was first to report Sgt. Major Chandler's comments on the new tattoo rules.
