Valley Blood Supply Critically Low

Posted:

CENTRAL VALLEY, CA - The Central California Blood Center asks all blood donors, especially those who are O-negative, to please give at donor centers in Fresno, Visalia and Porterville as soon as possible in an effort to replenish the community's blood supply. High usage, particularly of O-negative blood, is again straining inventory. O-negative blood currently is at the critical level of just 17% of needed inventory.  It is the universal blood type which can be given to all patients in emergency situations.

"Recent high usage, particularly since the Labor Day weekend, has caused a decrease in our O-Negative blood supply," said Chris Sorensen, Director of Community Relations and Development of the Central California Blood Center. "We are asking new and returning donors to please take an hour and help save someone's life today.  Our patients in Valley hospitals depend on our generous blood donors…and they couldn't need you more!  Please give today!"

Blood donation takes less than one hour to complete. Donors must be in good general health, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds and be at least 17 years old (16 years old with written parental consent). Senior citizens are encouraged to donate, as there is no upper age limit. Donors should eat a good meal and drink plenty of water within 4 hours prior to their donation. Donors can give blood every eight weeks. Photo ID and Social Security Number are required at donor registration.

The Central California Blood Center is the sole provider of blood and blood products for the 31 hospitals in Fresno, Tulare, Madera, Kings and Mariposa Counties and must collect between 5,000 to 6,000 pints of blood a month to meet the needs of our Valley community.

Visit the Central California Blood Center online to find a donation location near you.
