Madera Teen Dies In Car At School; Police Investigating Death

Updated:
MADERA, Calif. (KMPH) -

Update:

The Madera Police Department says the girl has been identified as 14-year-old Graciela Martinez, a student at Madera South and a resident of Madera County.

The Madera Police Department is investigating the death of a 14-year-old girl whose brother says she died in a car at Madera South High School, where they both attend.

Police say the boy told them he and his sister rode together to school Wednesday morning, and that he went to an early class while she stayed behind in the car; her class was going to start an hour after his.  After school finished for the day, the brother says he went to his car and found his sister dead in the car.

In a news release, police said: "At this stage of the investigation it appears that heat may have played a role in her death, but an underlying medical condition may be discovered once further medical examination is performed. There does not appear to be anything criminal in nature at this stage of the investigation."

The district superintendent is holding a press conference at 7:30am Thursday morning. The school has not released a plan for how it will deal with the girl's death.
