Massive Rim Fire Now 20% Contained

Posted:
YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK, Calif. (KMPH) -

The Rim Fire burning near Yosemite National Park continues to grow, but firefighters say they are starting to make headway.

So far, the wildfire has burned 179,000 acres, which is about 280 square miles. 100 buildings have been destroyed, including more than 30 homes. The massive fire is the biggest ever in the state's Sierra Nevada region.

The fire continues to threaten two groves of giant sequoias inside Yosemite National Park and firefighters are making an effort to protect the iconic trees.

High winds and dry weather also making it difficult to fight the fire in rough terrain but high humidity is forecast for the area Wednesday, which has the potential to help crews contain more of the wildfire.

Although the Rim Fire has burned a very remote part of Yosemite National Park, so far it has not affected Yosemite Valley, where most tourists go.
