Two cousins who went into a Fresno County lake on Sunday had to be rescued, but one eventually died.

The drowning happened at Avocado Lake, about 23 miles east of the city of Fresno. Witnesses say the two, both 18-year-old males, were playing with a soccer ball before they went underwater.

"The guy was throwing the ball around, and I guess it went into the deep part of the lake," said Vanessa Medina, who witnessed the incident.

Witnesses pulled both boys out of the water. One was flown to the hospital.

Despite efforts from emergency crews, one of the 18-year-olds could not be revived, officials said. The other was unconscious when he was pulled out of the lake, officials said.

Witnesses say, he wasn't under water for too long, and eventually regained consciousness.

She says it took nearly 30 minutes for family members to free him and get him out of the lake.
