Hometown Swearing-in For Senator Andy Vidak

Posted:
HANFORD, Calif. (KMPH) -

Newly elected State Senator Andy Vidak was sworn in on the steps of Hanford Civic Auditorium instead of under the State Capitol dome in Sacramento.

Saturday's swearing in ceremony for Senator Vidak had that hometown feeling.  There was a who's who of local politicians present and past.

Vidak who is Republican asked former Democratic Assemblywoman Nicole Parra to give the keynote address.  Parra took a swipe at Michael Rubio who resigned his Senate post in February.  "We need and desire for our elected officials when they take this oath of office to serve their full term."

Vidak called on his longtime friend Tulare County Superior Court Judge Gary Johnson to perform the swearing in.  Vidak's Mother and Father Cathy and Jim got the first hugs.

Senator Vidak promised his new constituents that he would be a good public servant. "I am going to work for you each and every day.   The door is going to be open for everyone.   The door is going to be open in Sacramento for everyone."

It was a day for lots of picture taking as the sixteen district welcomed its first Republican Senator since 1994.

Vidak's win over Leticia Perez marks the first time since 1996 that the winning senate candidate of a special election was not from the same party as the outgoing senator.
