School Supplies: Will You Pay More This Year?

Posted:
CLOVIS, Calif. (KMPH) -

Are you ready to head back to school? Well, ready or not the new school year is just around the corner and that means it's time to shop for school supplies. However, will you pay more for school supplies this year?

"We're just trying to get the basics before the rush this weekend and before school starts next week," says Melissa Hernandez.

Hernandez was on the hunt Monday for school supplies for her daughter who is starting kindergarten.

"You have to hit the sales," Hernandez said. "That's when you get your biggest deal and that's when you need to stock up is on the sales."

Families say they're doing the math before they buy, because they say they don't want to stretch already tight budgets.

"We try to stay ahead by going online first and see if there are any deals online before coming here," says Day Alcover, "that way we know what to actually look for."

The National Retail Federation says families will spend less on school supplies this year. The retail trade organization predicts families will spend around $635 on back to school supplies, down from $689 spent last year.

However, people out shopping Monday say that's not the case for them.

"With my daughter growing up, because she's now going to be in high school it's a dramatic increase compared to how much it was in middle school," Alcover said.

To save money, Hernandez is stocking up on school supplies for the entire year.  She says she looks forward to filling her cart with markers, folders and glue sticks.

"No matter how old you get, new school supplies are fun," adds Hernandez.

Back to school shopping is big business. The National Retail Federation says even if parents nationwide spend less, K–12 spending will top $26 billion.
