Firefighters Box Aspen Fire Against River

Firefighters have trapped the Aspen Fire against the San Joaquin River in Sierra National Forest, dramatically slowing its growth.

From Tuesday to Wednesday, the fire grew by less than 300 acres.

"One side is against the river, and on the east perimeter the fire is slow-growing," incident spokesperson Lyn Sieliert said on Wednesday.

The fire is now 35 percent contained.

Mid-summer high-pressure inversion layers are holding the fire's smoke against the ground, however. Air across the region has been labeled unhealthful for all residents. Sensitive persons are advised to remain indoors with windows closed and air conditioners and air filters on.

Lightning apparently ignited the blaze on Tuesday, July 23. Three structures have been threatened, officials said.
