Aspen Wildfire: Flames Create Bad Air Quality

Posted: Updated:
FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (KMPH) -

A battle rages on in the Sierra National Forest as crews try to gain the upper hand on more than a dozen wildfires.

Since Sunday, lighting storms started 15 new fires, several miles north-west of Huntington Lake.

The largest located below Stump Springs Road, and is named the Aspen Fire.

Flames have scorched between 2,000 and 3,000 acres, and is currently zero percent contained.

The fires are creating smoky conditions from Huntington Lake to Shaver Lake.

Tourist Criss Hurley says, "We just going to wait it out and if they saw we need to leave we'll leave."

Emily Wenzel works at Shaver Coffee & Deli.

Wenzel says, "It's really weird you can see it through the windows it looks really foggy but it's really not. It's not normal."

Usually when a wildfire breaks out, residents say the winds blow it to the valley floor, but not this time.

Shaver Lake shop owners hope the smoke will not keep tourists from visiting the area.

They do want to remind visitors this Saturday July 27, 2013, a car show will take place in Shaver Lake from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
