West Nile Virus Found In Crows In Lemoore; Incidents Tick Upward

Posted:
LEMOORE, Calif. (KMPH) -

Several dead crows reported by Lemoore residents over the past few weeks have tested positive for West Nile virus, the Kings Mosquito Abatement District said.

Abatement district officials said several mosquito samples collected in Lemoore have also tested positive for West Nile.

"We are very concerned about the rapid increase in activity," said Michael Cavanagh, District Manager. "We are considering all options available to prevent human infection, including aerial and ground based fogging."

So far, 11 mosquito samples and six dead crows have tested positive for West Nile virus in Kings County.

Forty-eight people in Kings County have been diagnosed with West Nile virus since 2005. Three of those cases have resulted in death.

Here are some steps to prevent mosquito breeding and to guard against mosquito- transmitted illnesses:

-- Protect yourself against mosquito bites by using a repellent with an effective ingredient such as Deet, Picaridin, or Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus.

-- Prevent mosquito breeding by ensuring pools and spas are properly maintained, emptying containers that hold water, and making sure outdoor facets are not leaking.

-- Prepare your home- make sure window screens and screen doors are in good repair.
