Mariposa County is poised to open three air-conditioned cooling centers as soon as this weekend if the National Weather Service issues an Excessive Heat Warning.

The centers are at the county library off Bullion Street in Mariposa, at McCay Hall in Cathey's Valley and at the Coulterville Community Club.

The Mariposa library is closed on Sunday but will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Monday. The library is open from 8:30 to 6 p.m. the rest of the week at 4978 10th Street.

The county's emergency phone information line will be updated with cooling center information at 966-1133.

If someone you know needs checking on, call Mariposa County's human service hotline at 966-7000.

"Ask (for help) before there are complications," the human services department said on the county's Web site.

During past heat waves, people have suffered and even perished because they did not turn on air conditioners. Now is the time to use your air conditioner, health experts advise.

Residents are also urged to check on elderly friends and family members--and anyone who lives alone or experiences health issues.
