FRESNO, Calif. (KMPH) -

Fresno's fire chief was arrested Wednesday night on charges of domestic battery and criminal threats.

Fresno County Sheriff's Deputies arrived at the northwest Fresno home of James Robert Brown shortly after 9 p.m.

According to the Fresno County Sheriff's Office, deputies were advised that Roberts had assaulted family members, was acting violently and had been peppered sprayed by a family member more than once.

Brown was visibly intoxicated and initially uncooperative with deputies when they arrived on the seen, according to the sheriff's office.

Brown was booked into the Fresno County Jail. Brown posted bail on Thursday.

City Manager Mark Scott on Thursday released a statement saying that Brown has been placed on administrative leave pending investigation.

Deputy Chief Kerri Doni will serve as acting fire chief in Brown's absence, Scott said.
