Posted:
TULARE COUNTY, Calif. (KMPH) -

A South Valley man was sentenced Wednesday to more than 65 years in prison for the shooting death of his wife and the assault of his two adult sons, the Tulare County District Attorney's Office said.

Eleazar Alcantar, 51, of Woodville, was found guilty of one count of first-degree murder, two counts of assault with a firearm and one count of possession of a firearm by a restricted person in April.

The jury found that on May 21, 2012, Alcantar shot and killed his wife and then assaulted his two adult children with a gun when they ran into the room after hearing the gunshots. He was not supposed to possess a firearm because he had a prior misdemeanor conviction for spousal battery, the DA's office said.

Alcantar will serve a total term of 69 years to life in state prison.
