FRESNO, Calif. - After staving off elimination two times, including once earlier in the day, the Fresno State baseball team fell short in their attempt to extend the season another day, losing 4-0 to San Diego State (28-29) Friday afternoon at the 2013 Mountain West Baseball Championships.
"The last couple of months we have played pretty good baseball," Fresno State head coach Mike Batesole said. "The good news is we played our best at the end. I think we've played as good as we could've played these last four games. We don't take any satisfaction out of that, though."
After exploding for 10 runs on 10 hits in the morning game against Nevada, the `Dogs' bats were shut down by Aztec starting pitcher Ryan Doran. The senior starter threw a complete game shutout, allowing just seven hits and striking out seven while not allowing any walks. Fresno State did not get a runner past second base in the game despite getting its leadoff batter on base in seven of the nine frames.
Fresno State (23-33) starter Jake Shull, making just the third start of his career, kept them in the game by pitching out of multiple jams early.
"I was really happy with what Shull did (today) - he went out and pitched almost 50 more pitches than he's thrown all year," Batesole said. "[He] pitched with a lot of heart, and made a couple big pitches when he had to. He pitched a heck of a game and left his heart out there on the mound, and that's all you can ask for as a coach."
But in the bottom of the sixth, San Diego State leadoff hitter Greg Allen, who made two amazing catches in center, got to the freshman. Allen laced a two-run double down the left field line to score Jake Romanski and Evan Potter and push the Aztec lead to 4-0.
In the top of that inning, Fresno State threatened to tie it up with its best scoring opportunity of the game. Freshman Brody Russell led off with a single and Jordan Luplow was hit by a pitch to put two on with two outs for Bulldogs' outfielder Aaron Judge, but Doran was able to get the junior slugger out with a swinging strikeout to shift momentum back to the San Diego State dugout.
With the loss, the `Dogs dropped to 18-5 in elimination games since the 2008 run to the National Championship.
