Fresno Woman Prepares For Double Mastectomy

Posted:

Jeannie Burkhart is a Fresno based esthetician. She is following in the footsteps of a Hollywood star; like Angelina Jolie, she is getting a double mastectomy.

Burkhart however isn't getting the procedure as prevention; she is getting to fight for her life.

Burkhart was diagnosed with stage one breast cancer in February of this year. She had no family history, or high risk gene. She had even cleared a routine mammogram test in November of the previous year. Detecting the cancer was not something Burkhart ever expected.

She credits self examination for saving her life. "If you're not aware of your own body and what's happening with it you could very easily miss something that could very well kill you," said Burkhart.

Burkhart encourages all women to self detect. She hopes that her story will inspire more women to take proactive action against this wide-spread disease.
