An unidentified adult male was severely injured and burned when his small pick-up truck left Highway 140 just before 4 p.m. Tuesday afternoon and plunged down a very steep embankment near the intersection of the highway and Old Highway North.

The vehicle caught fire on impact and ignited a wildland blaze that swept quickly through dry brush and bull pines.

According to Fire Chief Jim Wilson, the adult male was the only occupant of the vehicle when he was pulled from the flames by CHP officers.

Emergency responders including CHP officers, Mercy Ambulance medics and sheriff's deputies had to struggle up the incredibly steep embankment to transport the large victim for treatment of extensive injuries.

Fire fighters quickly knocked down the flames and prevented the fire from crossing Old Highway North into more vegetation.
