Coalinga Crash Kills Two Children, Injures Three

COALINGA, Calif. (KMPH) -

Two children were killed Sunday afternoon in a single-vehicle crash near Coalinga, the California Highway Patrol said.

The accident happened around 2:45 p.m. on Highway 198 west of Parkfield Grade.

Officers say the 33-year-old driver of a 2001 Nissan Sentra carrying four passengers allowed the car to veer before overcorrecting and spinning out into the road. 

The car then continued to spin out of control down an embankment, overturned and then struck a tree, the CHP said.

A 4-year-old girl and a 6-year-old boy who were not wearing safety belts were ejected from the car and died at the scene.

The driver and the two other passengers were transported to local hospitals for treatment.

Officers do not suspect that alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash.
