TULARE, Calif. (KMPH) -

A Tulare county school was placed on lock-down after Tulare police shot a man who led them on a high-speed chase.

The shooting happened Tuesday afternoon just before 3 o'clock, when kids were about to be let out of school near Strathmore.

Tulare police say officers tried to pull over this white pickup truck, but say the driver just kept going.

Police are not releasing the man's name, but Michael Gaitan says his uncle, Joseph Langston is the man shot by officers.

Michael says his uncle lives next door to him and used to work as a beekeeper.

Police say during the chase the driver of the truck threw several items out the window, they believe were drugs.

Michael Gaitan says, "I saw him in the ambulance real fast and he told me that he loved me, and I asked the cop what had happened and they said we can't release the information."

Reporter asks, "Has your uncle been in trouble with the law before?"

Michael says, "Yeah, he has a big history, he's been to prison before."

Police say the man shot by officers was rushed to the hospital but is expected to survive.
