KMPH Photojournalist "Volunteer Of The Year"

FRESNO, Calif. (KMPH) -

A KMPH photojournalist on Wednesday was recognized for his contribution to Central Valley youth.

Ryan Hudgins was named "School Volunteer Of The Year" Wednesday at the Hands Across The Valley National Volunteer Week Luncheon, held at the Fresno Convention Center.

Hudgins was recognized for starting a football camp in Hanford to give local youth something positive in which to participate.

That camp has grown from a handful of kids to more than 500 who turn out every year.

It's an accomplishment Executive Director Cathy Caples says her organization could not ignore.

"I think he is a classic example of a volunteer who saw a need and took action," Caples said. "He said, 'you know what? I don't have to wait for someone else to put this together. I'm going to take charge and do it myself.' And we just need more people like that."

Hudgins and nine other volunteers were honored Wednesday and received a piece of art from local artists as a gift.
