Hit and Run Victim Recovers, Police Search For Van

Posted: Updated:
SELMA, Calif. (KMPH) -

It has been nearly 5 weeks since a 6–year–old boy was hit and dragged by the driver of a van nearly the length of a football field.

However, Selma police detectives are not giving of hope of finding that driver.

Meanwhile, Elijah Romero continues his recovery in a downtown Fresno hospital.

The 6–year–old is barely able to stand due to his latest surgery. Skin was graphed from his inner legs and used to cover his wounds on his back and arm.

However, if you think that is keeping him down, think again.

Elijah says, "I know that God is protecting me, and I know everyone is praying for me and I thank you and I love them."

Elijah's mother, Angela Hernandez says, "Even though he's in so much pain, he's still showing who God is. God has carried him through this and he acknowledges him all the way."

Selma Police Detective Rene Garza says, "We believe the victim was hit here in this general area and was dragged by the vehicle, and you can see the streak."

Police say on March 16, 2013, an early 1990's model light colored blue or gray van hit Elijah while riding his bike.

Detective Garza says he continues to investigate, but the leads are running cold.

Angelica Mejia has this message for the person who hit her cousin and ran off.

Angelica says, "I pray who ever did this to my cousin needs to come forward and brings us peace to our family. We are going through a lot right now."

As you can imagine, Elijah's medical costs are astronomical, and continue to grow.

So to help off set the costs, a fundraiser dinner will be held this Saturday April 20, at the Selma Da Vita parking lot, at 2711 Cinema Way, in Selma.

It will take place from 10 am to 2 PM.

For the price of $7.00 you can get a tri–tip dinner and help out the family.

If you have any information about this case, you are asked to call Detective Rene Garza at the Selma Police Department.

The number is (559) 896–2525, or you can call Crimestoppers at (559) 498–STOP.

Your tip can earn you a $1,000 reward.
