Gas Thief Driving Stolen Car Tries To Run Over Cops

Posted:
KINGS COUNTY, Calif. (KMPH) -

Kings County deputies narrowly escaped injury early Tuesday morning after a suspected gas thief trying to escape turned his car into a weapon.

Deputies say 34-year-old Larry Chavez, of Visalia, was caught trying to steal gas in the 6600 block of Grangeville Boulevard around 4 a.m.

When deputies confronted Chavez, he got into his vehicle and sped off at a high rate of speed, the Kings County Sheriff's Office said.

Chavez then drove his car at the deputies, narrowly missing them. Deputies say they had to jump out of the way to avoid being run over.

The car Chavez was driving had been reported stolen out of Kings County last month,  the sheriff's office said.

A car chase continued through Hanford, finally ending in the 1000 block of Greenwood Avenue.

Deputies say Chavez got out of the car and ran for a short distance before being arrested. The driver ran a short distance and was arrested by deputies.

Chavez was booked into the Kings County Jail for attempted murder of a peace officer, assault with a deadly weapon, driving a stolen vehicle and felony pursuit.
