MADERA COUNTY, Calif. (KMPH) -

A 37-year-old Madera man who was convicted of attempted murder was sentenced to 74 years to life in state prison, the Madera County District's Attorney said.

Carlos Maldonado was sentenced for attempted first degree murder and three additional felony counts of assault with a firearm, said Madera District Attorney Michael Keitz.

Maldonado and his 35-year-old brother, Timothy, went to a home in Madera to challenge 44-year-old Michael Greer to a fight, according to the district attorney's office. That's when officials say Maldonado pulled out a gun and began shooting, striking Greer four times and wounding three other people.

"Maldonado's lengthy sentence is a result of the "use a gun and you are done" statute, which was designed to stop criminal violence with a firearm. People who choose to use a firearm in the commission of a crime need to know they will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law and will face severe consequences for their actions" Keitz said.
