Local Vet Helps Combat Buddy: Why He Needs Your Help

Posted:
CLOVIS, Calif. (KMPH) -

An Army veteran is trying to help a friend who he fought side-by-side with in Iraq.

Justin Bond is a mover and a shaker when it comes to helping men and women who served in the military. He founded "Our Heroes Dreams," which helps wounded soldiers and their families.

Bond's latest project is helping a Clovis man who he served with in Iraq. The Clovis man suffers from post traumatic stress disorder.

"During his army time, he got a metal plate in his head from a military vehicle wreck," Bond said. "He returned home and like many of us did, he checked out for awhile. He had a hard time dealing with the public and society."

He also returned to his Clovis home that had become a mess due to a leaky roof that was ignored far too long. All of the holes in the ceiling had to be removed due to mold and the wood had to be treated.

The roof has since been repaired, but money and volunteer help are needed to fix everything inside.

"He was out protecting us so now were trying to protect him and his family, "Bond said.

Bond said that initially the retired army sergeant wouldn't accept help. But Bond convinced him it wasn't a hand out, but a hand up.

Bond's biggest problem now, time is running out.

"We've got a week left and we don't have the rest of it donated," he said.

Bond needs six rolls of insulation, paint for the inside and outside, 450-square feet of carpeting and 1,600-square feet of tile.

The bathroom also needs a major makeover starting with the sink and counter top. The reason for the rush is the family is staying in a Clovis motel and their room is only paid for through next Tuesday.

Volunteers are also needed to help with the painting, carpeting and tile work.
