Lemoore Teen Tests Positive For Tuberculosis

Posted:
LEMOORE, Calif. (KMPH) -

A Lemore High School student has been diagnosed with active tuberculosis, leading health officials to test hundreds of students and staff once school resumes from spring break.

The Kings County Health Department announced on Monday that the student, who has not been at school since the diagnosis, is being treated and is expected to make a full recovery.

The student was not identified.

While tuberculosis is contagious, infection is most likely to occur with prolonged contact with a person with active tuberculosis, health officials said. In most cases exposure doesn't lead to infection.

Still, the county health department is working with the Lemoore High School officials to identify students, teachers and staff who have made contact with the student.

Health officials say that those individuals will be evaluated, which will likely consist of skin testing.

Any individuals found to be infected will be offered additional evaluation and treatment through the health department.

Anyone concerned about TB can contact their health care provider or the Kings County Department of Public Health at 559-852-2579. For additional information about tuberculosis, visit the Department of Public Health website at
