Man's Best Friend: 100 Dogs In Madera Need New Homes

Posted: Updated:
MADERA, Calif. (KMPH) -

A Madera man's passion to get stray dogs off the street turns into a $22,000 fine from the city of Madera.

Now he needs help finding homes for nearly 100 dogs.

Nicanor Santiago, who worked in the fields for more than 30 years, says he has a soft spot for strays.

He is now trying to give the dogs away, as many dogs as he can to anyone who wants them.

"People would bring dogs and leave them with me, because they knew I would take care of them and not harm them," Santiago said. "They would promise to return but would never come back."

Santiago's friend, Paula Bass, said that she has tried to help him out.

"I bring him meals for himself and go to Wal-Mart to buy him dog food, because he doesn't want to leave," Bass said.

The Madera Police Department said it is aware of the situation and is giving Santiago at least two weeks to try and find homes for the dogs. If he is unable to, then animal services will pick up the animals, more than likely most will be euthanized.

Santiago has separated the dogs by sexes into separate kennels. However, with 22 small-breed dogs, 69 larger breeds and such a small area, it is nearly impossible.

Santiago says that he will give anyone who wants a dog one of his for free. I will give it to them for free.

"I would rather they find a new home than be euthanized in a few weeks," he said.

Anyone who is interested in getting a free dog must do so in the next few weeks.

For more information, contact the Madera police department at (559) 675-4220 and they will put you in touch with Santiago.
