Captured: Federal Inmate Who Escaped From Fresno Officers Found In LA

Posted: Updated:
LOS ANGELES, Calif. (KMPH) -

A federal inmate who escaped from correctional officers while receiving medical treatment last month has been captured in Southern California, authorities said.

Thanousone Volarat, 33, was captured Wednesday night by the U.S. Marshal Pacific Southwest Regional Fugitive Task Force.

Late last month, Volarat slipped out of the backdoor of Central Fresno Health Care Center after he asked Fresno County officers to use a bathroom in the facility.

Thanousone -- still shackled, handcuffed and in his red jumpsuit -- fled in a Honda that had been waiting outside.

Volarat's escape was well-planned and executed with the assistance of several conspirators, U.S. Marshals said.

He was tracked down in the Southern California town of Garden Grove, about six miles southwest of Anaheim.

Authorities said Volarat was hiding inside of a clothes hamper and again attempted to forcibly escape when U.S. Marshals closed in on him.

He had been in custody since September of 2011 on federal drug charges. But, he would visit the health center regularly for dialysis treatment.
