FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (KMPH) -

UPDATE: Fresno Police say a 24-year-old Iowa man was the driver of an SUV that dragged a police officer about 60 feet before it crashed into a house.

John Behnken was arrested Thursday after police tried to force him out of an SUV that was pulled over on Freemont Avenue. Police say he resisted arrest and then took of in the SUV, dragging the officer.

Behnken had a felony out-of-state warrant for his arrest. 

A woman and child were also in the car, but officers were able to remove them from the vehicle.

The 23-year-old woman in the car with Behnken was cited and released.

Original: A suspect driving a possible stolen SUV on Thursday crashed into a home, dragged a police officer and hit gas meters.

The incident, which happened around 8 a.m., forced officers to briefly evacuate nearby homes out of concern for a potential gas leak.

Fresno police approached the vehicle after receiving a call of a suspicious vehicle in the neighborhood with a man, woman and child.

The suspect was caught taken to hospital, a couple of surrounding homes briefly evacuated for safety because of gas leak. Fresno police approached the SUV because they got a call of a suspicious vehicle in the neighborhood with a man, woman and child.

Police then pulled over the SUV and the woman and child were taken out of the SUV. When officers tried to take the driver into custody, he took off, dragging an officer about 60 feet before ramming into the house.

Two officers were able to then arrest the suspect. 

The officer was not hurt in the incident. He was taken to St. Agnes Hospital to be treated for cuts and scrapes.
