MERCED, Calif. (KMPH) -

A man who was riding his bike on Tuesday evening was struck and killed by a car in south Merced, the California Highway Patrol said.

The collision happened around 7 p.m. on Childs Avenue east of Tower Road. That's when the CHP say 55-year-old George Avila was driving his 2001 Ford westbound and approached the 53-year-old bike rider from the rear.

As Avila approached, he noticed that the bike rider, whose name is being withheld pending the notification of his next of kin, riding on the right edge of the westbound lane. Avila turned his car in an attempt to avoid the bike rider, but was unsuccessful. Avila struck the rear of the bike rider, throwing him from the seat of the bike onto the dirt shoulder.

The bike rider was transported by ambulance to Mercy Medical Center where he later died.

CHP do not consider alcohol a factor in the collision.
